The Role of Simulation in Developing Reliable and Resilient Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Systems
In this tutorial, Graham will discuss how modeling, simulation and other computational tools support the development of renewable energy and energy storage systems. Through worked examples, Graham will step through engineering considerations from early-stage feasibility through to detailed design and operational deployment. The way in which the different stages can be effectively connected will also be discussed. Topics covered include,
- Early-stage techno-economic optimization and sizing of a given system structure.
- Quasi-static power system simulation to assess physical behavior over the system lifetime.
- Energy management design.
- Electromagnetic transient (EMT) linear simulation to rapidly assess dynamic response.
- EMT switched-linear simulation to assess the impact of power electronics.
- Configuring models for real-time simulation.
Dr. Graham Dudgeon is senior principal product manager for electrical technology at MathWorks, focusing on applications and workflows that are conducted at all stages of electrical technology development and operation. Graham has been at MathWorks for 22 years and supports several industries in the electrical technology area, including aerospace, marine, automotive, industrial automation, and power and utilities. Prior to joining MathWorks, Graham was Senior Research Fellow at the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Electrical Power Systems at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland, UK. He holds an M.Eng. and a Ph.D. from the University of Glasgow
